What are some ways to make prostate cancer more well-known, and raise money for it

What are some ways to make prostate cancer more well-known, and raise money for it?
I know this doesn't really belong in Gender & Women's studies, but the folks here seem to be much smarter than in the Health section, which is the suggested category. Sigy: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/low/health/663688.stm

It is well known- but getting many men to the doctor for the physical and blood tests required is very hard. Caught early it has one of the best survival rates. It has a lot of financial support and medical research behind it already.

It seems to me it is pretty well known, and just for the treatments for it the success rate is pretty darn good. My father has it, and is in remission. He did not do the seed implants but just had it removed to be on the safe side, and is recovering very well. I did not realize it was not well known. Maybe because my father has it, it seemed the information is out there just going by how its treated.

The tv ads for breast cancer awareness show breasts. The ads for colon cancer show buttcheeks. Maybe we should get some ads with penises to really get peoples attention.

How about starting your own website to raise awareness? many non-profits are dot-org, so maybe you could start something like that. Testimonials, statistics, and links to doctors that can help - if you know people who know those who have suffered or been affected, get in touch with them to see if they can help. I would think there would also be support groups for this kind of thing, or least there is something else you could start.

Lister .. don't worry qbout your question "belonging" here it is a totally legitimate good question! I think that probably public awareness of prostate cancer in the US can be raised with talks on college campuses and with shows on PBS. I don't know how much research money is in cancer research in general but I'm sure that more money can't hurt. You may also want to look at the cancer research that is relevant to more than one type of cancer and the research into treating specific types of cancers. For example maybe some things that we discover about some female cancers can be applied to our knowledge of prostrate canser and vice versa. I'm very sure that this kind of thing is being done now but again..it doesn't hurt to encourage more of this!

Prostate and Breast cancer are two of the most well known cancers. We have very sophisticated testing and treatment for both. Both cancers are highly detectable and treatable. Neither is a death sentence. It is the lesser known cancers that need to be publicized, and more money put towards researching them. Liver/pancreatic cancer, melanoma, and lymphoma are a few that most people don't know much about. Liver/pancreatic cancer and melanoma are some of the deadliest cancers in people, which is why more research needs to be done.

To get a verity of answers try putting it in both sections. Take note how the breast cancer research fund raisers do it. Get a gimmick (maybe a blue ribbon instead of pink) and attach it to everything and charge more for that object. Take the profits and donate it to the cause. That will bring the awareness and the funds up.

Women, if you husband or loved one is over the age 50, set up an exam for them. Do not leave it up to men to do it, we will rarely volunteer to go to the doctors. The hardest thing I have ever had to face, was coming home from the oncologist and seeing my 7 yr old son, after being told I have a 64% five year survivability rate. Mentally I have accepted it, but physically the treatments take there toll. I have melanoma and it is very unpredictable.

This 1) is a place to work for and donate to and 2) shows where men are neglected by our tax dollars. http://www.fightprostatecancer.org/site/DocServer/Prostate_Cancer_Statistics-Funding_for_a_Cure.pdf?docID=203 Of course, this is only federal monies... but the large organizations and commercials neglect this issue as well. But, of course, it's primarily a white man's disease... various ethnicity's are vulnerable but Caucasian men get it nearly 10 times more.
