There are no signs you can look for. They are basically the same as BPH and it is not possible for the patient to distinguish between cancer and normal aging until it is very advanced.. I don’t understand the problem. It is simple to diagnose – they just do a biopsy.

Prostate cancer-- symptoms:- * Urinary hesitancy (delayed or slowed start of urinary stream) * Urinary dribbling, especially immediately after urinating * Urinary retention * Pain with urination * Pain with ejaculation * Lower back pain * Pain with bowel movement Other symptoms that may occur with this disease: * Excessive urination at night * Urinary leakage (incontinence) * Bone pain or tenderness * Blood in the urine (hematuria) * Abdominal pain * Low red blood cell count (anemia) * Unintentional weight loss * Lethargy Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a glycoprotein in the cytoplasm of prostatic epithelial cells. It can be detected in the blood of all adult men. The PSA level is increased in men with prostate cancer but can also be increased somewhat in other disorders of the prostate. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the PSA test for annual screening of prostate cancer in men of age 50 and older. PSA levels between 4 and 10 ng/mL (nanograms per milliliter) are considered to be suspicious and should be followed by rectal ultrasound imaging and, if indicated, prostate biopsy. PSA is false positive-prone (7 out of 10 men in this category will still not have prostate cancer) and false negative-prone (2.5 out of 10 men with prostate cancer have no elevation in PSA). Recent reports indicate that refraining from ejaculation 24 hours or more prior to testing will improve test accuracy.

My husband has been receiving shots of Lupron every 4-6 weeks for prostate cancer. What is the purpose

My husband has been receiving shots of Lupron every 4-6 weeks for prostate cancer. What is the purpose?
Lupron supposedly reduces his male hormones and will be going through radiation for 4-6 weeks daily.

1 :
It is for anemia which can occur with radiation.
2 :
When I was on chemo I got Lupron injected into my thigh muscle and the purpose of it was to stop my periods... I have no idea why a man would need it.
3 :
Male hormones stimulate growth of prostate cancer. In this way Lupron inhibits growth of the cancer.
4 :
prostate cancer needs testrone to grow it is suppressing him male hormones good luck with his treatment
5 :
I had prostate cancer in 2005. I was given one lupron shot before I had proton radiation. Lupron is not a cure for prostate cancer. It basically puts the disease on hold. It stops the progress or spread of the cancer for a while. It will only work for a while. The maximum time it will work for is about ten years, however that depends on the stage of the prostate cancer; It can work for only a year or so at times. I had proton radiation for my prostate cancer and am fine now. I am totally convinced that proton radiation is the very best treatment there is for prostate cancer. Depending on the circumstances, it usually has a 90% cure rate and no side effects. I had my treatments at Loma Linda University Medical center in Loma Linda California. If you would like to know more about proton radiation, there is a website called Proton Bob that has much info about prostate cancer and proton radiation. If you go to the website be sure and read the Patient testimonial section from former Proton radiation patients... or if you have questions, please feel free to email me here at yahoo answers. Have a good day.also Also i will add that Proton Radiation is very different from conventioal radiation. With Proton radiation, approximately 85% of the treatment energy is realeased exactly at the point of the tumor therefore very little surrounding body organs or tissue is damanged as it is with conventional radiation.. therefore you have little or no side effects. Conventional radiation is like a shot gun and proton radiation is like a rifle.... is the best way I can describe it.. the treatment energy is controlled much better with Proton radiation.. be sure and read the Proton Bob website....I was not sick or even felt bad one single day during or after my proton radiation treatments. My PSA is now .07... I have no side effects... its like i was never sick...One thing I might mention about the Lupron, it will cause your husband to have hot flashes and it took me about six months after the shot to get over the hot flashes... I think thats true with most people who have lupron shots.. the six months of hot flashes that is.

What are good resources to learn about treatments for prostate cancer

What are good resources to learn about treatments for prostate cancer?

Well, start with your doctor. Online, start with the web sites below.
2 :
Just go straight to the website below. Um, there are many cancers that can be cured. The thing is, doctors give chemo therapy with no other choice. And if you dont follow through, eventually the doctor says that there is nothing they can do. Thats not true. They want to prescribe chemo as a way to make money right before you die. With chemo, you are not getting sunburned, you are practically microwaved. The chemo kills the cancer cells and your body cells at the same time. And if they can kill the cancer before they kill you, then you are cured. But, what about after? Your body is damaged and your health is deteriorated. You cannot live pass another 5 years. Do you know anybody who has lived for more then 5 years after chemo? Not too many. And compared to the masses, its nothing. So, you will eventually die taking chemo. I suggest looking up CESIUM CHLORIDE, OXYGEN DROPS, GREEN ALGAE, PAW PAW, etc etc. They will cure cancers even when doctors have given up, and some with results as high as 90%. These medicines cannot say anything about cancer on their labels. They have to be sold as health products or vitamins. This way, people wont flock to it, thus leaving behind chemo therapy. Their websites are allowed to tell you how to use it and which cancers it cures. Chemo is what makes money for doctors, with pretty much negative results if you ask me. These treatments when taken in combination can combat cancers like a common cold. I dont make any money out of this and only trying to help you so please dont get me wrong. I just dont want the same thing to happen to you. After it was too late, I asked the doctors about those medicines, and they said that it "might" work. They are afraid to say that it will because if they say the wrong things, they will be up against the medical community. Why didnt he say anything about those before? Because of money. I mean, if anybody can create these non toxic medicines, then nobody will take the chemo and radiation. Chemo and radiation is pretty much like microwaving you and pumping you with chemicals with no chance to survive 2 years later. I urge you to hurry as pancreatic cancer is dangerous. Just call them up and tell them what kind of cancer you have, your age, and your health condition and they will sell you a complete package. It will be costly sometimes because they may tell you to drink this for 6 months, etc etc. But, its well worth it, and many people have lived even after doctors have given up. I was too late for my friends, but if I can help someone else, I would be happy. Take care my friend, and may god take care of you.

Is total PSA test sure answer to ascertain prostate cancer

Is total PSA test sure answer to ascertain prostate cancer?
Doest the test of total prostate antegen total give correct picture of having psotate cancer?

The PSA test is a good indicator, but it is not the complete answer.
2 :
Not necessairly, it gets you into the high 90percentile but not total accuracy, but with it and a finger wave, it is as close as you will get without either MRI and/or a tissue sample of a suspect. You may get a better answer from the health area. I only know and can tell you what I understand and that is that the PSA is an indicator and not a 100% factor. You might also try WEBMD.com for more information.
3 :
no it needs to be followed up with a biopsy http://www.cancerbackup.org.uk/Cancertype/Prostate
4 :
No. There is another clinical way called as DRE. DRE stands for digital rectal examination. But most doctors prefer both DRE and PSA are done together rather than independently for better detecting prostate cancer. Further tests like MRI, CT scanning, bone x-ray, bone scan and ultra sound scan clarify any doubt whether or not you have prostate cancer. Your doctor can ask you if you have bone pain and weight loss as these are normally associated with prostate cancer. Your behavioral change like hesitancy too indicates malignant prostate caner. Obviously, PSA test is more accurate than all othertests but definetely it is not conclusive. See here http://www.healthgenie.org/Cancer/ProstateCancerhtml.html
5 :
PSA tests are not always accurate. My godfather's PSA came back fine but the biopsy showed cancer. The only "no fail" way to diagnose cancer is with a biopsy.
6 :
I had a PSA level that suddenly rose to unacceptable levels, I had a digital and a needle biopsy, neither of which hurt. The biopsy came back clear, nothing malignant. A year or so later, my PSA went up high again, so another needle biopsy was conducted, this time I was found to be with cancer. The PSA can go through the roof (readings of 200 plus) and you may still not have cancer. Mine was 3.4, then 4.7, then 7.4 then nearly 12. I had Brachytherapy last June 6th and a blood test yesterday. I have dropped to 3.2. You do need a biopsy. Take heart, the worst is the embarrassing position you have to get in - on your side with your knees up towards your chest while someone rummages round inside your rear end! As I've said, nothing painful at all. It sounds worse than it is. Go and get a biopsy if needed. Best of luck, and if you need to write to me, I'm alderneyjim@yahoo.co.uk Feel free.

6 :
Well it will not prevent cancer but maybe the article was exposing the chemical composition in these items that would contribute to a better and healthier prostate. I believe that nature has many great healing or helpful agents that promote the healing process in alot of the health issues we are being presented with these days. Good for you that you found something so interesting and shared it with us. All the best to you.

I have a question about radiation pellets for prostate cancer

I have a question about radiation pellets for prostate cancer?
I have a buddy who is about to undergo the procedure. Is there anyone out there who has had it that he can talk to?

Ask your friend to call the department where the procedure is to be done. They will help him meet other people who have had the same procedure. Good luck.
2 :
when one has radioactive seed implantation they cannot be around pregnant ladies and children. It is a difficult situation, in elevators in public transportation, buses, planes at ball games and such. He cannot hold a child. If a spouse or girlfriend is sleeping in the same bed as that person, they would be very anxious I am sure.
3 :
I'll talk to him but I'll tell him what my surgeon told me. There is radiation, and there is radiation treatment with seeds (pellets), but the only way to be sure is to remove the prostate and test the lymph nodes to make sure that it hasn't spread. Any other way and you are taking a chance that the cancer will come back. I couldn't live with that fear haunting me. It was removed five years ago and I'm clean as a whistle.
