Radiology vs the shots? Someone I know has prostate cancer, and I was wondering which is the better treatment

Radiology vs the shots? Someone I know has prostate cancer, and I was wondering which is the better treatment?
This person is 67 years old, overweight, and was diagnosed with prostate cancer about 3 weeks ago. His psi count is 6. My grandfather took the shots and his cancer is gone, and he was 80.
For some reason though they want to do radiation treatments. Does anyboby have any input?

Depends on the cancer and the patient. Some patients require both chemo and radiation. They have been having good results with radiation treatment for prostate cancer. The American Cancer Society www.cancer.org can provide current info on treatment options.
2 :
Radiation for prostate cancer is a common treatment. Your grandfather may have gotten shots of anti-androgens or female hormones, being too old for more aggressive treatments. Different treatments for different patients, at different ages.

Can cirrhosis spread and cause prostate cancer

Can cirrhosis spread and cause prostate cancer?
can it spread and cause other diseases? can it cause prostate cancer or problems with mens prostate?
Cancer - 6 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Cirrhosis does not spread or cause prostate cancer.
2 :
No. Cirrhosis is a disease of the liver only.
3 :
Cirrhosis isn't cancer. It is a replacement of healthy liver cells with what basically amounts to scar tissue. The only cure is a liver transplant but it can be treated to manage the symptoms, which can include; bruising and bleeding, jaundice, hepatic encephalopathy, liver cancer (can cause cancer, but it isn't cancer), low blood supply to the kidneys and other things. So to sum it up--yes cirrhosis can cause problems for other organs but it isn't cancer and the cirrhosis itself doesn't spread it can just cause other problems in the body.
4 :
Cirrhosis is Liver disease ,it can not cause prostate cancer. Prostate cancer can spread to liver and will give clinical ascities and other symptoms of liver involvement.
5 :
Cirrhosis is a liver disease that affects the liver. Cirrhosis is caused by Alcohol abuse and Chronic Hepatitis B and C. Cirrhosis brings cancer of the liver not cancer of the prostate gland. Cirrhosis is called scarring of the liver. a condition where the liver cells are replaced by scar that causes long term chronic liver disease. your health question is irrelevant for anybody to answer at yahoo answers.
6 :
No i dont believe so. I think thats a separate problem. But if you are un-healthy..having cirrhosis, you are most at risk for developing prostate cancer. But to cause it directly, doubtful.

Could someone corroborate that abstinence of sex is a risk factor to prostate cancer

Could someone corroborate that abstinence of sex is a risk factor to prostate cancer?
I remember reading that priests, monks etc showed a higher incidence of prostate cancer due to abstinence but I have not been able to find it again. just off the press. For example, men who reported 21 or more ejaculations per month in their 40s had a 32% lower risk of prostate cancer later in life compared with those who reported between four and seven ejaculations per month. Men who reported more than 21 monthly ejaculations in the previous year had a 51% lower risk of prostate cancer. Overall, an average of 21 or more ejaculations a month during a man's lifetime decreased the risk of prostate cancer later in life by 33%. And each increase of three ejaculations per week during a man's lifetime was associated with a 15% reduction in prostate cancer risk.
Ejaculation May Lower Prostate Cancer Risk The findings, published in the April 7 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association, are based on data collected from nearly 30,000 predominately white men aged 46 to 81.

"Some investigators have suggested that sexual abstinence may contribute to prostate cancer risk, but there is no consistent evidence to support this contention despite multiple studies in the past 30 years" See link in source.
2 :
This is one of those times where it doesn't pay to wait for all the evidence to be in. As long as ejaculation doesn't hurt you, keep doing it in the hopes that it may prevent bad things.

Turmeric as a supplement when battling prostate cancer

Turmeric as a supplement when battling prostate cancer?
I bought it as I heard it was helpful for psoriasis (didn't help me.) My boyfriend is battling inoperable late-stage prostate cancer and he heard turmeric has show to shrink the tumor but that it has to be cooked. Anyone know anything about this?

Turmeric is supposed to be one of the better anti-inflammatory substances. One theory is that inflammation is involved with causing cancer. But even if it is actually a side effect of cancer, it would probably make him feel better.
2 :
If your boyfriend has the presence of mind to do what he needs to do, then click on the link below and follow the regime found on that page. Also, there is another link explaining the concept and why he has a decent chance of beating his cancer, even at a late stage. Do some research on the web and look for anything posted by or about Dr F Batmanghelidj. He spent over 20 years discovering the concept that most of people's health problems are caused by dehydration, and by correcting the dehydration, most problems will heal themselves - even the so-called "incurables" such as cancer. Of course, you're welcome to believe whatever you want, but if it were me, I'd be looking down any alley that offered a light of hope, especially at such a late stage. I have 100% faith in the treatment. Even if you don't, it involves water, salt and a few supplements that the body needs anyway (and is not getting enough of). It doesn't interfere with any medications or treatment, and is practically free (there might be an investment in the supplements). Please look at it and consider it. To be honest, I can't say 100% for sure that it will help because I don't know how far advanced the cancer is - but if it does help, the only thing I ask is that you share the experience and help others.
3 :
While I do not believe that any supplement will help in his fight against prostate cancer, turmeric is said to lessen the discomfort from gynecomastia (breast tenderness) in men receiving anti-androgen therapy like Casodex. It certainly could not hurt him either as turmeric is a natural substance. You want the fresh root (probably from a health food store) and not the dried kind. It is not hot or spicy and can be added to foods. As with anything, please inform his doctors that he is using this substance (and any other supplements) so they are well informed. You and your boyfriend may want to seek out your local chapter of Us, Too, the prostate cancer support group. These are men that have been through all different treatments and can give firsthand advice.

If a doctor said that your prostate cancer is a 7 on a scale 1 to 10 what exactly does that mean

If a doctor said that your prostate cancer is a 7 on a scale 1 to 10 what exactly does that mean?
I'm 19 years old and I found out my grandpa has prostate cancer. My parents told me the doctors said it's a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10. I don't know much about this, so any information or websites about this would be greatly appreciated.
I just want to be able keep up with them when they give us more detailed information.

that means there's a good chance he has prostrate cancer.

Been there!! When the PSA blood test comes out above 4 and shows increase a biopsy is done. The 7 score is after a biopsy and is called the Gleason Scale . 7 is not all that bad. The age of your grandfather and other factors come into play. Choices are watchful waiting , surgery , radiation ( add chemo and hormone treatment if needed. I elected radiation . There was no pain except going there under the machine for 5 minutes 5 days a week for 8 weeks. Noe comes the part that they do not tell you. Any time for 2 years after radiation you might get radiation proctosis or bleeding from the rectum and/or lymph edema leg swelling. My cancer is gone , my PSA is .036 BUT I bleed and wear depends and take water pills at age 80

my husband was 7 out of 10. this is pretty advanced. he took flax oil w/cottage cheese. his psa went down to 1.

A woman has no prostate. Can her male children inherit gene from her that increases prostate cancer chances

A woman has no prostate. Can her male children inherit gene from her that increases prostate cancer chances?
It's known that a family history of prostate cancer increased the odds for prostate cancer. But can the gene responsible for this be passed on by women, who, obviously, have no prostate themselves?
Cancer - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
At least 11 genes have been identified as being linked to prostate cacner risk. If they are on the y chromosome, a woman cannot pass them on, if they occur anywhere else, she can. "Those comparisons linked prostate cancer to variations in the following genes: MSMB, LMTK2, KLK3, CTBP2, JAZF1, CPNE3, IL16, CDH13, EHBP1, NUDT10, and NUDT11. Several other genetic variations also stood out but haven't been mapped to any particular gene."
2 :
It's worth mentioning that only 5 - 10% of a prostate cancer cases are caused by inherited susceptibility genes. A strong family history of breast cancer may also affect a manĂ¢€™s risk of prostate cancer, particularly if the family members were diagnosed before the age of 60

I understand that prostate cancer is slow-growing. How long would it take to show as a 7 on a PSA reading

I understand that prostate cancer is slow-growing. How long would it take to show as a 7 on a PSA reading?
A PSA count of 3 is cause for concern as I understand it. Wondering, bottom line, how long the prostate cancer went undetected. Thank you.

Not all prostate cancer is slow growing. My PSA went from 1.2 to 8 in less than 2 years. I don't think 3 is terribly alarming if it is stable, but if it moves up then it is cause for alarm. Please, for your own good, consult a good urologist and be under his guidance.
2 :
Good question. I will try my best to shed some light on this topic for you, but I do not have all of the facts or data which would be a bit more helpful, such as age, previous PSA scores, medication, and family history. That being said, I will assume you never had a PSA done prior to this initial exam. If that is the case, it could have been several years for your PSA to climb to this high of a number. Also, if you happened to have sex prior to having your PSA drawn, or on some medications, there is a potential that your PSA is abnormally high due to those reasons as well. If you did have a prior PSA, and it jumped from a 3 to say a 7 in less then one year, then you may be looking at a more aggressive prostate cancer. If you haven't has a prior PSA, and none of the first paragraph applies, then I would say you need to see a Urologist for a Digital Rectal Exam and a biopsy. If your biopsy comes back positive for prostate cancer, then you need to seek a consultation from both a Urologist and a Radiation Oncologist. Some Urologists will just go ahead and take you to surgery without having you get all the information for treatment options. This is why it is VERY important to also seek the advice of a Radiation Oncologist. Both can treat the disease, but both have very different potential side effects. Surgery is higher for impotence, Rad Onc can be higher for Rectal Bleeding or irritation upon urination. If you would like to read or learn more, please look at the following site: http://cancergeek.wordpress.com This entire site is dedicating all of September to Prostate Cancer and Education to everything and anything relating to prostate cancer. It is maintained by a specialist in Oncology.

Where can I find materials on reassurance for prostate cancer patients

Where can I find materials on reassurance for prostate cancer patients?
How can I find info on how to encourage a friend who has had lazer treatment for prostate cancer?

Hard Question friend. My husband had "radical" prostate surgery last year. That's the removal of the prostate. I did extensive research on the choices and there are lots of web sites available on line. My husband went through the Veterans Hospital because he was a Vietnam Vet and was exposed to Agent Orange. You might consider going to the VA's web site....They have several links to Health questions for their vets and families. I also used several searches on line that were reliable.....dot gov. or dot org. addresses are the safest. Your friend will need lots of encouragement. Just be there for him because that means a lot. Hope this helps Good Luck!!

Murray's How to Prevent and Treat Cancer with Natural Medicine is full of good info and advice and lists many different resources in the indexes. Pat Quillen's Beating Cancer With Nutrition is also a good resource. No guaranteed cures, but a truckload of info and suggestions that have been helpful to many people. Good luck and God bless!
