My father in law had a difficult time controlling urination and lost any kind of sexual feeling for a long time, but he's been done with treatment for just over a year and both have returned. He went through chemo and radiation for his.

You will expect some pain, weakness, and other side effects from the treatment you described. If you feel the treatment is not working you could look into other options, see these links. http://www.cancertutor.com/Other/Prostate_Cancer.html http://www.naturalnews.com/027534_vitamin_D_prostate_cancer.html

How can one know that he has prostate cancer? What are the symptons

How can one know that he has prostate cancer? What are the symptons?
How should some one keep himself from it? Is there any thing discovered as what causes prostate cancer?

If you have trouble with your prostate usually the first thing you notice is that you have trouble peeing. The urethra, the tube that carries your urine from your bladder, runs right through the prostate, so it gets sort of pinched off. You have to pee a lot and you only go a little each time. Or you feel pain when you pee. But there are a lot of things that can cause this, especially in middle age (after 40 or so). So a doctor will order tests. He can feel the prostate with a finger to see if there are lumps. Prostate cancer is fairly common but it develops very slowly. If it's diagnosed in a man over 60, they don't even treat it because you probably won't live long enough for it to be a problem. It is one of the most common types of cancer in men, but one of the least dangerous.
2 :
Initally you can get an indication by the symptoms. The symptoms of Prostate caner are - Prostate cancer usually doesn't produce any noticeable symptoms in its early stages, so many cases of prostate cancer aren't detected until the cancer has spread beyond the prostate. For most men, prostate cancer is first detected during a routine screening such as a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test or a digital rectal exam (DRE). When signs and symptoms do occur, they depend on how advanced the cancer is and how far the cancer has spread. Early signs and symptoms of prostate cancer can include urinary problems, caused when the prostate tumor presses on the bladder or on the tube that carries urine from the bladder (urethra). However, urinary symptoms are much more commonly caused by benign prostate problems, such as an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia) or prostate infections. Less than 5 percent of cases of prostate cancer have urinary problems as the initial symptom. When urinary signs and symptoms do occur, they can include: - Trouble urinating - Starting and stopping while urinating - Decreased force in the stream of urine Cancer in your prostate or the area around the prostate can cause: - Blood in your urine - Blood in your semen What causes prostate cancer and why some types behave differently are unknown. The precise cause of prostate cancer is not known. However, there are several known risk factors for disease including age over 55, African-American heritage, a family history of the disease, occupational exposure to cadmium or rubber, a high-fat diet, ethnicity, hormones, and the environment. Men with high plasma testosterone levels may also have an increased risk for developing prostate cancer. Research suggests that a combination of these factors may play a role.-

You should get checked regular, if you wait for symptoms to appear then you may be putting yourself at risk for metastasis. If you don't know what that is then you should read the article below. http://www.healthmad.com/Conditions-and-Diseases/What-is-Metastasis-and-Why-is-It-So-Deadly.311389 The fortunate thing about prostate cancer is that it is so slow growing that most men that get it usually die from an unrelated cause
6 :
The symptoms of prostate cancer is quite similar to BPH or Prostatitis. However it is the most dangerous of all prostate problems and you should seek immediate counsel from a physician if you are faced with these problems. however here is a good article on the symptoms. http://healthlime.com/prostate-care

I'm sure the surgeon knows what he's doing and your dad going to be alright. Good Luck!
2 :
There are 53,000,000 surgeries performed in the US each year. You probably hear about all the ones that don't go well on the TV. Doctors are very, very, very good at what they do...
3 :
No, surgery is not a guarantee the cancer will be completely removed. There are several treatments for this disease and the urologist would have gone over them all with your parents so that they may decide what is best for them. It was probably 4 cores, not cells, that had cancer and no, they will not just remove those cores because prostate cancer is diffused. Although this is a fairly long surgery (about 4+ hours) there are often any dangerous complications if that is your concern.
4 :
My wife had cancer a couple years ago and yes, there were some complications. BUT, we got through it, she's just fine and her cancer is just a distant memory. No one can guarantee your dad's surgery, or any surgery, won't have complications, but even if it does, it won't anything your surgeon never dealt with before, and one day too, yoiur dad's cancer will just be a distant memory. Mike----it'll be ok.

How much should prostate cancer research be getting as compared to breast cancer research

How much should prostate cancer research be getting as compared to breast cancer research?
Recent studies show that the death rates from Prostate Cancer are much higher than previsously thought, higher than even Breast Cancer rates. Even previosuly, there was only a 1% difference in the death rates. Do you know how government research money is provided for Breast Cancer as compared to what is provided for Prostate Cancer? Recent studies have also found that the PSA for prostate cancer is not as reliable as once thought, so vigilance in taking the test may not help. The difference is that the government provides $1 for Prostate Cancer research for every $700 for Breast Cancer. This last year, the very first Federal Men Health Commission was established, but it has to find its own funding. There are over 200, fully funded Federal Women's Health Commission. http://www.menshealthnetwork.org/

I'm not sure about the studies but, do believe they should be equal as far as research go. Actually any kind of cancer should be studied more, you would think if we can put a man on the moon and spend all this money helping other counties fight wars, we could find a cure for cancer.
2 :
That's thanks to the power of lobby groups. And this is why I think breast cancer activists are misandrist.
3 :
they should be of equal importance...both are deadly forms of cancer that have a greater death rate across all cancers...It's a bloody disgrace that one has preferential treatment over the other...
4 :
I'm not sure how the funds are divided, but the rates of death could be directly related to the fact, that women are now going to the doctors specifically for breast exams and mammograms catching cancer earlier. Maybe the men are not as vigilant. Also, you might take into consideration that women are involved in A LOT of private breast cancer research fundraisers and charities, so therefore, breast cancer research may be making greater strides with the private donations.
5 :
The disparity in funding is due, not to less government funding for prostate cancer, but the private funds raised for breast cancer by survivors like myself, people who simply have a friend or family member who has had breast cancer and corporate sponsorship of the cause with portions of sales of certain products being earmarked for breast cancer research. We get out there and pound the pavement and raise the funds and patronize companies that support the cause. The difference in death rates is not due to lack of testing on the part of men or the PSAs accuracy, but men who receive a diagnosis and don't follow treatment protocols if they seek treatment at all. They're more worried about losing their "masculinity" than their lives. I am not defined by the state of my breasts. My only concern is that they be healthy. As part of my treatment to suppress hormone production due to an estrogen/progesterone positive tumor I opted to have my ovaries removed rather than take pills to accomplish it. Does that make me less of a woman? Of course NOT! If you're concerned about these inequities go out and raise money and awareness!

none !!!. come on its been know by some of the best doctors. all these diseases are treatable check it out for your self

What do numbers mean in prostate cancer screening

What do numbers mean in prostate cancer screening?
My guy told me today that after his recent lab work, it showed "high numbers" in regards to his prostate health. He has an appointment to see a specialist in January. Can someone who has been there or knows about this explain to me what these high numbers mean? I'm not sure he understands himself or doesn't want to worry me.
He is 63 & otherwise in good health, his father had prostate cancer. I am very worried. Thanks.

I would not worry too much about it, its just numbers, my own father ( who is 78 ) had that issue ten years ago, but nothing came of it. Prostate cancer ( assuming he was at risk of getting it, as it is connected more with diet than with family history ) is a very slow disease compared to other cancers, and many men do not opt for treatment as a result. He might want to try saw palmetto if he is concerned. See this link for more info. http://www.naturalnews.com/025859_cancer_Prostate_prostate_cancer.html http://www.naturalnews.com/024917_saw_palmetto_Prostate_health.html
2 :
If his numbers have been low all along and now they are suddenly high, this could be a warning sign of prostate cancer. He should follow through with his appointment to see a urologist and take the warning very seriously. Prostate cancer is not necessarily a death sentence but must be regarded as a serious health problem, and he should take the advice of his physicians. But not all cases of high PSA have prostate cancer, some of them just have high PSA and we don't know why.
3 :
I presume it refers to PSA. The hight the PSa the more likely the man has prostate cancer but there are other causes for rasised PSa so the only way do be sure is a biopsy. Prostate cancer in older men is often slow growing and many will die from unrelated problems
4 :
A PSA is only one tool to help determine prostate cancer and there are several things that can cause it to be elevated. It would be helpful to know if he had a digital exam and if he has any symptoms, if both are negative I wouldn’t worry much.

How Do You Feel About Little Money Being Spent on Prostate Cancer Research

How Do You Feel About Little Money Being Spent on Prostate Cancer Research?
Breast cancer research receives 50 times the amount of money that prostate cancer research receives. 40,000 women die per year because of breast cancer. Yet, 27,000 men die from prostate cancer. Supposedly, dads, sons, and husbands are important to women. How do you feel about the way-out-of-proportion amount of money that breast cancer resereach receives even though your dads and sons are just as much at risk of dying from prostate cancer? Do you give money to breast cancer research while giving little to prostate cancer?

I didn't realize there was such a big difference, wow. I never see affiliations collecting for prostate cancer research. So...next question is, what do we do about it?
2 :
Early testing is the key to prostate cancer. It's that simple. Prostate cancer is highly treatable in its early stages. This goes for testicular cancer as well. This isn't so with breast cancer. However, heart disease is still the #1 killer! tc
3 :
seeing as i am a woman i think that it should be equal. woman and men are equal and prostate cancer is on the rise.
4 :
I lost my Mother to ovarian cancer, yet I almost never hear a word about it anywhere. The blood test for prostate is covered by insurance, but the blood test for ovarian cancer is not. How is THAT fair?

No. Absolutely not. Cancer comes from mutated cells. Masturbating does NOT mutate cells. Masturbating is HARMLESS.

Nope, just hairy palms. I'm sure the books you are using for this "paper" would be able to tell you better than a bunch of people on here.
