My dad has prostate cancer .I need help understanding please?
my dad is 55 years old he had a prostate exam and today we found out he has cancer. The doctor told him not to worry he just has ot have surgery and the cancer will be gone. Should we worry i mean is this a dangerous type of cancer? The doc said the surgery will get rid of it but does is there a chance that he may get another type of cancer is the surgery dangerous? Please pray for him :/. thank you god bless you all.

Hi, back in September of 2008, my dad had the same surgery. He was 56 years old. The surgery is very very very safe. I think the surgery take about 3 hours. After the surgery my dad stayed in the hospital for 4-6 days, but had a Catheter in for about two weeks. Believe me, you got nothing to worry about. The only scary thing that happened was that when they brought him upstairs from the recovery room, the elevator got stuck :P. Just be thankful that they caught it on time.

if it was caught early then treatment for prostate cancer is very successful, you dad will be sick for a while ,as the treatment is intense , there is no reason that you dad will get further cancer, he will have constant checks ,

Surgery doesn't always get rid of the cancer. I had the operation and they removed the prostate and glands. I still have the cancer. My only treatment options was hormone injections every 6 months. Hormones are normally good for about 18 months but longer in some people. Almost 2 years and they're still working. I have no bladder control and no sex drive. Everyone is different and some men have very good luck with the surgery. Don't mean to scare you, just giving you the facts. Good luck to you and your Father

Of course your Dad would be far better off not having cancer at all, but prostate cancer is very manageable, and (because Dad found out about it at a relatively young age), it is not a serious threat. Surgery & radiation or chemo will fix your Dad right up, so it's not really "dangerous". (If your Dad was 10 or 20 years older, the doctor might even recommend NOT treating him at all, because prostate cancers usually grow so slowly that a 75-year-old will usually perish of old age before the cancer get's 'em)

This is very strange. If his cancer was bad enough to know on exam only the doctor would have said so then, not days later and no doctor would tell a patient he just needs surgery and the cancer will be gone, especially without metastatic work up. Having prostate cancer does not increase the risk of another cancer. Also, that fact that he is young makes it more dangerous not less dangerous.
