Recent studies show that the death rates from Prostate Cancer are much higher than previsously thought, higher than even Breast Cancer rates. Even previosuly, there was only a 1% difference in the death rates. Do you know how government research money is provided for Breast Cancer as compared to what is provided for Prostate Cancer? Recent studies have also found that the PSA for prostate cancer is not as reliable as once thought, so vigilance in taking the test may not help. The difference is that the government provides $1 for Prostate Cancer research for every $700 for Breast Cancer. This last year, the very first Federal Men Health Commission was established, but it has to find its own funding. There are over 200, fully funded Federal Women's Health Commission. http://www.menshealthnetwork.org/

I'm not sure about the studies but, do believe they should be equal as far as research go. Actually any kind of cancer should be studied more, you would think if we can put a man on the moon and spend all this money helping other counties fight wars, we could find a cure for cancer.

That's thanks to the power of lobby groups. And this is why I think breast cancer activists are misandrist.

they should be of equal importance...both are deadly forms of cancer that have a greater death rate across all cancers...It's a bloody disgrace that one has preferential treatment over the other...

I'm not sure how the funds are divided, but the rates of death could be directly related to the fact, that women are now going to the doctors specifically for breast exams and mammograms catching cancer earlier. Maybe the men are not as vigilant. Also, you might take into consideration that women are involved in A LOT of private breast cancer research fundraisers and charities, so therefore, breast cancer research may be making greater strides with the private donations.

The disparity in funding is due, not to less government funding for prostate cancer, but the private funds raised for breast cancer by survivors like myself, people who simply have a friend or family member who has had breast cancer and corporate sponsorship of the cause with portions of sales of certain products being earmarked for breast cancer research. We get out there and pound the pavement and raise the funds and patronize companies that support the cause. The difference in death rates is not due to lack of testing on the part of men or the PSAs accuracy, but men who receive a diagnosis and don't follow treatment protocols if they seek treatment at all. They're more worried about losing their "masculinity" than their lives. I am not defined by the state of my breasts. My only concern is that they be healthy. As part of my treatment to suppress hormone production due to an estrogen/progesterone positive tumor I opted to have my ovaries removed rather than take pills to accomplish it. Does that make me less of a woman? Of course NOT! If you're concerned about these inequities go out and raise money and awareness!
