Carcinoma of the prostate is predominantly a tumor of older men, which frequently responds to treatment when widespread and may be cured when localized. The rate of tumor growth varies from very slow to moderately rapid, and some patients may have prolonged survival even after the cancer has metastasized to distant sites such as bone. Because the median age at diagnosis is 72 years, many patients—especially those with localized tumors—may die of other illnesses without ever having suffered significant disability from the cancer. The approach to treatment is influenced by age and coexisting medical problems. Side effects of various forms of treatment should be considered in selecting appropriate management. Controversy exists in regard to the value of screening, the most appropriate staging evaluation, and the optimal treatment of each stage of the disease Patients with locally advanced cancer are not usually curable, and a substantial fraction will eventually die of the tumor, though median survival may be as long as 5 years. If prostate cancer has spread to distant organs, current therapy will not cure it. Median survival is usually 1 to 3 years, and most such patients will die of prostate cancer. Even in this group of patients, however, indolent clinical courses lasting for many years may be observed.

My Dad had it and was at stage 3, they did radical surgery and removed the inside of his testicles to slow it down and just left the pouch. The doctor gave him 3 months but he lived 4 months. My Dad saw the year 2000 come in, turns 80 , and died Jan. 31. all the same month. I wish you the best and God Bless You.

There is no average because everyone is an individual. There is no real way of predicting how long someone has to live, even doctors do not really know. One of the reasons predictions are not given is because some people will rally and live far longer than expected or others will pass suddenly. There is no way of truly knowing as dying seems to be as individual as everything else true about human beings. Suggest that you focus on each day and try not to worry too much about what might happen. Don't look beyond the moment. In the meantime you can read more about prostate cancer to get an idea what is going on with your boyfriend. National Cancer Institute: Prostate Cancer http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/types/prostate Prostate Cancer Foundation http://www.prostatecancerfoundation.org/ ACOR: The Prostate Problems Mailing List http://listserv.acor.org/archives/prostate.html Best to you.

Does Flaxseed Oil causes prostate cancer

Does Flaxseed Oil causes prostate cancer?
I have read articles online about the relationship between Flaxseed Oil supplements and prostate cancer, is that true? I mean do I expect to get prostate cancer if I use Flaxseed Oil?

Men across the nation dealing with prostate cancer are passing around a spurious report that flaxseed oil promotes prostate cancer. Nothing could be further from the truth. The report comes from the Oct. 6 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The primary finding of that study was that saturated fats promote prostate cancer. A tablespoon of flaxseed oil provides 5000 mg. of omega-3 fatty acids in a 4-to-1 ratio over omega-6 fatty acids. While both of these fatty acids are essential for life, men battling prostate cancer need omega-3s over omega-6s in a ratio which is uniquely found in flaxseed oil. While plant estrogens from soy (isoflavones called genistein and daidzin) have been advocated for prevention of breast and prostate cancer (Diet and Cancer, Plenum Press 1994), flaxseed provides the highest source of lignan, which is another plant estrogen that is touted for its anti-prostate cancer properties (Nutrition & Cancer 26: 159-65, 1996). The lignan in flaxseed oil has been shown to retard breast and colon cancer as well.

Anyone know anything about Prostate Cancer

Anyone know anything about Prostate Cancer?
I had prostate cancer surgery in September and I am having radiation in December. Problem is that I cannot get a erection to have sex. Is this normal or not?

The urologist should have gone over this with you BEFORE you had surgery and that is who you should be speaking to now. Therefore you should know this is a possible side effect. It may get better possibly completely the doctor should have told you if he was able to do a nerve sparing surgery or not and this is the best indicator whether erections will return to normal or not.
2 :
I don't know if this is normal, but there is a debate on currently as to whether the PSA test is really an indicator for prostate cancer. I know through support groups that many wish they had never had biopsies and undergone treatment. I hope all turns out OK for you, and I advise everyone to get a second opinion, and take control, before undergoing the current treatment for any cancer.
3 :
It happens. I had diVinci robot surgery a couple years back. I rely on Viagra (my urologist calls this vitamin V) for most of my erections. I don't recall my Doc going over this, but I did come across it in my research prior to surgery. Viagra is heavily marketed through urologists; your Doc can probably give you some sample packs to get going.

you haven't given enough info. my experience with cancer and the research i did indicated 1: cancer cells feed off blood and they stimulate growth of areas to feed from and the process causes bleeding, thus the loss of blood with no injury. 2: treatments can cause small blood loss during thier process of killing cancerous cells.

no.
2 :
no u can't get cancer by masturbating. if that is what happened then all the men in the world would have cancer.
3 :
Actually there is some evidence to the contrary that says mastrrbating helps. An no, 15 year olds do not get prostate cancer. But seriously, the survival rate is like 98% anyway. Just relax.

How many women will be wearing prostate cancer ribbons for Father's Day

How many women will be wearing prostate cancer ribbons for Father's Day?
On Mother's Day, many men wore pink ribbons to support the fight and research against breast cancer. Many men marched in breast cancer research funding walks and parades. In fact, the Major League Baseball players (all men) used pink bats and wore pink armbands in the games on Mother's Day to support this very same cause. Now, how many women will be wearing prostate cancer ribbons for Father's Day? Let me take an educated guess based on previous patterns, and say: "nowhere near as many men that wore breast cancer awareness ribbons." Further evidence that women today are far more sexist than men. Let me also state that there is roughly the same amount of reported cases of prostate cancer per year as there is breast cancer cases (slightly over 200,000 for each) --
the number difference between the two diseases only being a few thousand. Prostate Cancer Ribbon Pin: http://www.phoenix5.org/advocacy/prostateribbon.html ♀M☼♪δ♥: I agree with what you said. I don't think "all women are bad". But I applaud you in having the courage to support this cause. You deserve the utmost respect. We need to spread the awareness around of both breast and prostate cancer.

Is the prostrate cancer ribbon available in Australia? If it is, I'll definitely wear one to show support. Btw, thanks for bringing this important issue out in the open :) Lastly, not all women are bad, just like not all men are bad, have a little hope and faith in the women that are trying to see it from a man's point of view. Edit; That's great, I was worried there for a moment that you thought all women were sexist. But yes, prostrate cancer affects so many men, and even here in Australia, it's all about breast cancer in women and showing our support. Men need this support too. To the poster below, if women were given the chance and the support day was more widely available, then I'm sure more women would support this worthwhile cause, and I raise my hand first and btw I also talk with my husband about the importance of being on the look out for any changes and we chat about prostrate cancer, as I feel as though he doesn't know too much about it, and because I care for my hubby, I bring up the subject.
2 :
Well, I think you guessed wrong. I'm not sure even one woman will be doing that. I haven't heard of or seen any as far as I can remember. That's what I've been saying, how come men run like little wimps for womens' causes and women don't do the same for men? Of course women are worse sexists than men. They know that too. I'm really sick and tired of hearing about breast cancer the whole time like there are no other diseases out there. The thing is it's not even the leading cause of death in women. There are a hundred types of cancers and no body mentions those. It's only breast cancer.... I hope they find cures for all cancers but I'm just really sick of hearing and seeing the same thing on tv, radio, papers and even on signs on the streets over and over and over again. And I hope to see more women doing the "march for prostate cancer".
3 :
Well, I think the biggest reason you won't see thousands of women wearing prostate cancer ribbons is because of marketing. Ribbons for awareness is a fabulous marketing tool, but it takes time to establish a "new" cause. This question is the FIRST I have seen or heard about the ribbons, and I am a health advocate. I've known about prostate cancer for years, and encouraged the men in my family to be screened. But when did these ribbons come out? Why haven't I seen them in every retail outlet in my town? It takes time to raise awareness. So let's have realistic expectations, ok? When the prostate cancer ribbon has been in circulation for 5 years, then you can compare numbers. This is not an example of sexism, it is simply a matter of needing more time and more labor (and presumably, more money) to get the word out.
4 :
I don't wear ribbons, but I'm glad they started this new movement. It keeps everyone happy.
5 :
You may be right. Every group that has felt oppressed usually overcompensates later on. I think some women or feminist groups overdo it and become sexists just like some Blacks are racists in the name of racial equality. I think with time this will adjust itself.
6 :
I already had one. My father passed three years ago to prostate cancer.

Senator Dodd has announced that he has prostate cancer, and since he is in favor of government ran health care?
I would like to know if he is going to go to Canada or Britain to get the cancer operation, since he thinks socialized medicine is so much better than what we have now?

He has Congressional Health Insurance/Care - it is the best that our tax money can buy. He will have surgery here.
2 :
I guess you are not aware of the insurance coverage all government employees have.
3 :
He can get his death counseling here in the US. It will be free.
4 :
The US does have socialized medicine...what do you think the Veteran have? Government run hospitals, with government paid nurses and doctors. If Senator Dodd is a veteran, he will can us the Veterans Administration which according to William Kristol, a republican, is the BEST health care in the country! You might was to read the article in the link below. Bob Dole in the '90s said the American people do not deserve the same health care as Congress. Apparently republicans still maintain that stance.
