The main function of the prostate is to close off the urethra during sexual activities. Yes a man can continue performing after prostate surgery. Sometimes with no additional help, sometimes with medications, and sometimes with implants. Hope this is what you are looking for.
2 :
Reproduction is not usually a priority for men who have had prostate cancer; over 80% of all men diagnosed with it are over 65 and half of all cases occur in men over 75.
3 :
Yes and no. The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that produces some of the fluid in semen. It does not produce sperm, however; sperm are produced in the testes. Unfortunately for men, the urethra runs right through the middle of the prostate, so removal can cause urinary problems, and the prostate is surrounded by nerve bundles that control erections. After surgical removal, most men have trouble with erections. For some this is temporary, but many require some kind of assistance (like Viagra and other ED medications) to have sex. Most men can achieve erections and enjoy sex like before with some kind of aid like meds, vacuum pumps, etc. But some men have serious, long-lasting erectile dysfunction, especially if the surgeon removed the nerve bundles. Men cannot reproduce naturally after prostatectomy. The connection between testicles and urethra is destroyed. So a man interested in fathering children might consider banking sperm before surgery.
4 :
The prostates function is not to close off the urethra. That often happens when men get older and it causes problems. Its function is to protect sperm, make them have better motility and longer survival after ejaculation. Men cannot reproduce without it, but most men who have it removed don’t really care about that as they are usually over 65. Having it removed can cause impotence or erectile dysfunction and this is the main reason men refuse surgery. There is no way to know how surgery will affect an individual man prior to the surgery, however robotic surgery is less invasive and more precise than traditional surgery and men who undergo this type of surgery have a smaller risk for erectile problems.

How is nanotechnology helping the fight against prostate cancer

how is nanotechnology helping the fight against prostate cancer?
¿como la nanotechnologia a ayudado la lucha contra el cancer de prostata?

There are several ways of beating prostate cancer with nanotechnology: 1. Early detection (targeted contrast agents, magnetic nanoparticles coated with DNA labeling; nanoscale cantilevers coated with antibodies against tumor markers). however, it is difficult to achieve, since very few will accept these types of investigations. 2. Treatment - Bioactive immune stimulation; nanoparticles can be used to attack integrin expressing vasculature with gas bubbles, which then can explode by ultrasound; these are two new alternatives. Other options include multifunctional polymers, carbon nanotubes, gold nanoshells as contrast agents for cancer identification, drugs delivery and cancer cells ablation. However, most of these approaches are still in development.

My wife lost her father to prostate cancer. Should Obama fight harder against breast cancer or prostate cancer

My wife lost her father to prostate cancer. Should Obama fight harder against breast cancer or prostate cancer?
The cancer was absolutely horrendous and the death has left my wife and her mother devastated. Do libs seem far more concerned with protecting the lives of their daughters and moms instead of their sons and fathers? The Dems were sending 10X as much money to breast cancer research until a few years ago. I don't think he is really going to care. He'd rather make it harder for your loved ones to get treatment by socializing healthcare.

That is terrible! I am so sorry! Both need to get equal funding but historically, women's health has taken a back set and that is why women organized to get better treatment and research. Susan Koman's sister did an amazing job organizing and educating. Prostate cancer needs the same kind of leadership.
6 :
Well I'm sorry about your father-in-law, but Obama is not God. What do you think he should do?
7 :
The breast cancer obession is laughable. If women were really interested in saving as many womens' lives as possible, they would wear pink ribbons against heart disease. Heart disease kills WAAAAY more women than breast cancer does.
8 :
he should be a president. when he shows as he is already that he cannot provide the golden goose, people will see how stupid he is. doctors are the ones to fight and work to find cures not the president. he doesnt have much of a background in a real job let alone in a medical field. maybe when they extend affirmative action--which was how he and his wife got through school, to awaring medical degrees...then he will be in.
9 :
My dad battled his way back from a brain tumor, and he had NO HELP from the god damn government to do so. His HMO didn't pay, and Social Security, (into which he had paid for his entire working life,) refused to help him out with any kind of SSI or whatever because he owned more than three thousand dollars' worth of property. (His house, which they suggested he sell and move into a rental.) So what did he do? He lived down the medical debt. That was all he could do. Don't sit there and tell me that the government has some magical ability to help with cancer, because I hate to burst your bubble, but in reality, there is nobody in the government who gives two sh!ts about your father-in-law.
10 :
Cancer does not have political clout. Aids does even if it kills less than what cancer does. Just get some flaming homos to get cancer and they the government will listen.
11 :
How can you ask that when Bush did not even allow this country to move forward...stopping stem cell research? Just think how many people could have been saved by the research that was NEVER allowed. Your republicans have spent a lot of money of Viagra....is that what is MORE important to you people?
12 :
all cancer have the same thing in common as you stated it is abosolutely horrendous and leaves family members devastated my grandfather died of colon cancer that metastasized to his body i know of a little girl fighting metastasized bone cancer...given my gpa was 70 i feel more for this 10 y/o girl but i think we must work to find a cure to all cancers and i am democrat also work in the health field. and have seen people die of cancer who have A GREAT PROGNOSIS but cannot afford the care.
13 :
Neither. I lost my Dad to prostate cancer and fear that I'll get it as well. But this is not the purvue of the federal government my friend.
14 :
If everyone had adequate health coverage this would not be a question.
15 :
If they live long enough most men will eventually develop prostate cancer. My grandfather died from complications of prostate cancer but, he was 92. Women tend to develop breast cancer earlier than men develop prostate cancer.
16 :
why choose between them? Both (along with many others) need to be cured.
17 :
It is not the Government's job to do this. As for brest cancer, they were courting the women's vote. They don't really care about White Males. There is no way they are going to ever going to do more than break even with that block. . Black males are already in their pocket.
18 :
He is only getting started with reversing the Bush Stem Cell Research Ban.
19 :
If the U.S. had universal healthcare, maybe he would have found it soon enough to avoid the disease's consequences?
20 :
Look, do more research before coming up with such Ideas. Im sorry for the loss of your father in law but lets get some facts straight here alright. Part of Obama's stimulus package is big budget increase for NIH(National Institutes of Health) This department under the Health and Human Services (Tom Daschle was supposed to be the director of) is the premeire national and international reasearch institution for medicine. So Obama wants to spend big bucks here. How do I know, I work there, or in an institute that is part of NIH. How can you say the Libs steal other's money? Obama is strict on that wall street kind of thing and you know that. IF it wasn't for Obama, NIH would be laying of people instead of inviting potential cancer curers and HIV curers, etc.
21 :
prostate cancer if found early can be treated and the survival rate is very very good, not so with breast cancer......most men, Im not saying your father in law, dont like the exam, so usually when the cancer is found it is too late. All cancer is bad, the main thing is prevention....in honor of your father in law, tell your wife and mother in law to honor his memory, celebrate his life and tell every man they know to get a prostate exam....that means you, get the exam early, Im so sorry about your loss....I really dont think its a rep dem thing....if it is then we need to speak out ......
22 :
The DEMs aren't spending the money, the feds are, cancer research is connected.
23 :
Cancer is cancer. No matter what kind you get...it's going to be hell. I'm trying to figure out why you aren't ranting at Bush and his 6 year republican panel for not doing something more. Obama has barely had time to take a dump in the White House toilet, let alone make huge changes. He is in the process of reversing the stem cell research ban that Bush passed down to him. That alone will go a LONG way to helping cure horrible diseases. Not everything is about the government. Ordinary people get out there and raise money for research for causes near and dear to them. I walk for the March of Dimes every year. I also donate to breast cancer research because my mother is a survivor and I donate to lung cancer research. If this cause is so important to you.....do something about it. Start a charity. Recruit friends, neighbors and co-workers to help you. Go on the news, write the editor of magazines and newspapers....DO SOMETHING instead of sitting around b!tch!ng about it! I'm very sorry for the loss of your father in law. I lost my beloved step-dad to lung cancer. It IS horrible to watch. But we can't blame the government for everything. We really need do some things for ourselves, you know?

My dad has prostate cancer .I need help understanding please

My dad has prostate cancer .I need help understanding please?
my dad is 55 years old he had a prostate exam and today we found out he has cancer. The doctor told him not to worry he just has ot have surgery and the cancer will be gone. Should we worry i mean is this a dangerous type of cancer? The doc said the surgery will get rid of it but does is there a chance that he may get another type of cancer is the surgery dangerous? Please pray for him :/. thank you god bless you all.

Hi, back in September of 2008, my dad had the same surgery. He was 56 years old. The surgery is very very very safe. I think the surgery take about 3 hours. After the surgery my dad stayed in the hospital for 4-6 days, but had a Catheter in for about two weeks. Believe me, you got nothing to worry about. The only scary thing that happened was that when they brought him upstairs from the recovery room, the elevator got stuck :P. Just be thankful that they caught it on time.
2 :
if it was caught early then treatment for prostate cancer is very successful, you dad will be sick for a while ,as the treatment is intense , there is no reason that you dad will get further cancer, he will have constant checks ,
3 :
Surgery doesn't always get rid of the cancer. I had the operation and they removed the prostate and glands. I still have the cancer. My only treatment options was hormone injections every 6 months. Hormones are normally good for about 18 months but longer in some people. Almost 2 years and they're still working. I have no bladder control and no sex drive. Everyone is different and some men have very good luck with the surgery. Don't mean to scare you, just giving you the facts. Good luck to you and your Father
4 :
Of course your Dad would be far better off not having cancer at all, but prostate cancer is very manageable, and (because Dad found out about it at a relatively young age), it is not a serious threat. Surgery & radiation or chemo will fix your Dad right up, so it's not really "dangerous". (If your Dad was 10 or 20 years older, the doctor might even recommend NOT treating him at all, because prostate cancers usually grow so slowly that a 75-year-old will usually perish of old age before the cancer get's 'em)
5 :
This is very strange. If his cancer was bad enough to know on exam only the doctor would have said so then, not days later and no doctor would tell a patient he just needs surgery and the cancer will be gone, especially without metastatic work up. Having prostate cancer does not increase the risk of another cancer. Also, that fact that he is young makes it more dangerous not less dangerous.

Is Ovarian Cancer to a woman as Prostate Cancer is to a man? If so, R insurance co guilty of discrimination

Is Ovarian Cancer to a woman as Prostate Cancer is to a man? If so, R insurance co guilty of discrimination?
I've been told that Ovarian Cancer is to a woman as Prostate Cancer is to a man. If that is true, then I think that my health insurance company is guilty of discrimination. But I am not an authority that can make that judgement. I am wondering if it would be worth my time to start a lawsuit against any big health insurance company for this issue. I do not have the money for something like that and would need a really good attorney that would be willing to do this for free. Any suggestions? (PS. I've been having pains in the lower groin area and no doctor that I've been to has said anything about O.C. except one that said the test is not covered. I think it is the CA-125 test.)

Women won a lawsuit against the insurance companies when Viagra came out. Birth control was always concidered 'optional' and wasn't covered, but insurance companies were willing to pay for the viagra even though it is contraindicated for the people who really need it. If you can find a pro bono lawyer, go for it!
2 :
You need better health insurance, probably just cost you more.
3 :
I don't know for sure - I heard some time ago that breast cancer is to a woman as prostate cancer is to a man because of the high incidence of both. Check with the insurance company, not the doctor as he may be wrong. You don't want to start a lawsuit and then find out that the test was covered.
4 :
Women are different and men are different. Ovarian cancer is different and Prostrate cancer is different. I the insurance company make discrimination like this they can be sued. I request you to read the terms and condition of the insurance policy and see what are the diseases it is covered and they cover Pre-existing and determined diseases. Because insurance charges are different for the covers provided by them. I had heart problem and took insurance mentioning this fact and issued the policy without excluding heart ailments. Subsequently I had heart bypass surgery and when I submitted my Claim the insurance company refused to Honor it saying it was pre-existing. I filed a law suit and got the full money. So the terms of the policy are very important. After going through the same you can take up legally.

The first diagnostic tool for ovarian cancer is a GYN exam with rectal. Sometimes the mass can be felt that way. Insurance covers this test. Next, a CT scan should be done. This will give a clear view of tissue and disclose any masses. This test is covered by insurance also. You can have a vaginal ultrasound-covered also. All these tests are covered IF there is a possibility of OC. Do you have bloating, extra gas, pressure in the lower abdomen and pelvis? Do you have fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss although your abdomen is distended, pain in your back or leg? The CA125 is just another diagnostic tool-Although ovrian cancer usually causes a high CA125, other conditions can also. Sometimes there is only a small elevation. This test should be the last step-not the first. If you have not had the other tests I listed and are experiencing the symptoms I mentioned, don't waste time worrying about a lawsuit-take all the other steps first. Sorry this answer is so long but I have been there in re to ovarian cancer. The CA125 was done AFTER all the other diagnostic tools were used. Please let me know what happens.
6 :
Try the links in http://www.hot8sites.com/cancer/
7 :
The accuracy of the CA-125 test has been in question for quite a long time. People can have false positives or vice versa. Unfortunately there isn't a single accurate blood test to confirm or deny a woman has ovarian cancer. Ultrasound, MRI, CT Scans or PET Scans may be able to rule out presence of a tumor. You could have something such as cystic ovaries or endometriosis

Does an ultrasound detect prostate cancer

does an ultrasound detect prostate cancer?
I was wondering if a normal pelvic ultrasound detects prostate cancer. My prostate was checked in an ultrasound about a month ago and it was normal. I'm wondering because I've had a lot of prostate problems and I'm only in my 20's.
I knew a guy who was only 28 that had prostate cancer.

Treatments/statistics/sources with prostate cancer that has spread to lymph nodes

Treatments/statistics/sources with prostate cancer that has spread to lymph nodes?
A friend was diagnosed with prostate cancer that has spread to his lymph nodes only (has not spread to any other organs or bones). All I can find are sources that explain staging and treatments, but the more aggressive treatments (surgery/radiation) seem to be only for localized or low-grade cancer. I know the FDA seems to take forever to approve drugs/treatments that are being used abroad with great results; how do I find info on these types of studies done outside the US? Is it only a matter of time before his cancer spreads from the nodes at this point or is there a shot of chemo & hormones stopping it? Since it hasn't spread any further, wouldn't removing the prostate along with the nodes benefit him? I haven't found anything stating surgery as an option once it spreads from the prostate. I'm sorry this is so long with so many questions! Thank you!

I don't think the surgery is a good option...read more about lance Armstrong on the net as he had 5 different cancer types..basically his cancer was all over him and no one wonted to treat him..but he is still alive and compete for tour Du France! also read about Gerson therapy...and think of Nutritional Therapy..read about patrick holford as he is one of the leading in the field in UK...also I wont count much on chemo as chemo only smash down the immune system and kills everything good....As long as your friend breath he have chance to reverse the condition so don't stop and try whatever possible! Also he will need very healthy and organic diet and lot of good quality supplements.
2 :
If the cancer has spread from its original point then it is now a type 2 cancer. this is still a reasonably good chance of recovery as long as it was caught early on and is being treated with a more aggressive chemo regiment. The reason why surgery is ruled out is because it is no longer localized and this would cause several prolonged surgeries is some cases and can weaken the patients ability fight the cancer. chemo is very harsh on the body and docors prefer to minimize the additional stress. There still may be instances of surgery but this woud be to remove specific tumors that are either not responding to chemo or are continuing to grow. The danger of lymphoma( the cancer of the lymph system) is that is is a fast spreading cancer. It has the ability to jump to other organs and systems. operating on it serves little purpose unless it is in just on or 2 nodes since removing the nodes also removes the immune system with it. As for other test in other countries, you would be able to find them rather easily, if you switch you computer over to there countries settings such as language and use their search engines to look it up. you will need to read and write that language as most foriegn medical sites are written in their native language. you can try doing a search in the UK. it would be in English
3 :
Your friend has an advanced stage of prostatic cancer and the treatment for localized prostatic cancer will not cure him(surgery or RTX). He is candidate for hormonal therapy. If you want to find experimental treatment protocols in the us you can check www.nih.gov.
4 :
Beam radiation of the prostate bed and hormonal treatment are possible next actions. Chemo isn't used until the final stages. With these therapies, he has a good five year life expectancy, because even late stage disease is slow moving. You can find case studies at http://www.yananow.net and you can work out his statistics at http://www.prostatecalculator.org You can use Google Scholar to research journal articles. Best of luck. As for therapies outside the US, there are few initiatives in prostate cancer research coming from overseas. The only significant overseas therapy I am aware of is HIFU, but that's not appropriate for a more advance case.
