What is a the ballpark psa score of someone who dies from prostate cancer

What is a the ballpark psa score of someone who dies from prostate cancer?
My dad has prostate cancer, and has for a long time. Recently his score jumped from 50 to 195, what is the high end of the psa scale? Everything I'm reading says 20 is high, do people die at 400, 800, 1000?"

I don't think there is a correct answer to your question. Some people fight cancer better than others and it affects peoples bodies differently.

My husband had surgery for prostate cancer and his PSA was only 5.2 but it had doubled in one year so they did a biopsy. They found cancer and did a radical prostatectomy. He is doing fine now. I've heard of people's PSA being 400, even 800 and over. They fact that your dad's score jumped so much is definitely a cause for concern. Is it possible they are using a different methodology for the tests? Some labs have different ways of testing. This might affect the test score somewhat. What has you dad done so far? Watchful waiting? Radiation? Surgery? There are probably options available to him. He needs to discuss these options with a qualified urologist that he trusts. My father-in-law had an extremely high PSA but he had some surgery that prolonged his life several years and he was an old man when he passed away. I know this is scary but there is probably things that the doctors can do to help him. My father-in-law had his testicals removed and there by cut off the testostrone that feeds the cancer. Radical surgery but it worked for him. There may be other less invasive methods they can do. Ask and research the internet. Keep the hope! Best wishes to you and your dad.

What is the cause of prostate cancer

What is the cause of prostate cancer?
I am doing some research on prostate cancer but everything i check it says there is no cause for it. i need to know how it affects the cell. Any ideas?

It is thought that potential causal factors act by altering the balance of male hormones in the body because prostate cancer is a hormone-sensitive cancer, like breast cancer. The male sex hormone, testosterone, produced by the testes influences the growth and spread of prostate cancer. Thus, higher testosterone levels or greater lifetime exposure to testosterone appears to contribute to its development. This has been used to explain the higher incidence rates in African Americans, who tend to have higher average testosterone levels than other ethnic groups or in tall men who may have had an earlier onset of higher testosterone levels.
2 :
All cancers are caused by a sudden increase in rapidly growing cells. Scientists have not unlocked the secret as to why this occurs and why only some people get cancer and others do not. I don't know what you are looking for when you state "I need to know how it affects the cell". There are no answers as to why this occurs.
3 :
This is a hard question to answer. If we knew the answer we'd prevent it. But basically, it's a cell multiplication that has gone horribly wrong, and the body's immune system does not detect it. In other words, it's a cell mutation. Go here for a bit more info: http://www.1000topics.com/human-diseases/cancer/

Nobody knows what causes prostate cancer.

Why do people pay less attention to prostate cancer than breast cancer

Why do people pay less attention to prostate cancer than breast cancer?
I know its serious either way but people always talk about trying to find a cure for breast cancer but isnt prostate cancer more common among men than breast cancer among women? so why dont people ever talk about prostate cancer? Is this a little sexist somehow? Im confused

its not sexist, it has to do with how easy it is to cure the cancer. i am the yougest person in history to fight breast cancer so i know. prostate is much much easier to cure, and is usually found earlier than breast cancer. breast cancer is not as easy to cure

B/C Save the T*TTYS! sounds a lot better then Save the A** holes! Estimated new cases and deaths from prostate cancer in the United States in 2008: New cases: 186,320 Deaths: 28,660 Estimated new cases and deaths from breast cancer in the United States in 2008: New cases: 182,460 (female); 1,990 (male) Deaths: 40,480 (female); 450 (male)
3 :
No, prostrate cancer kills the same amount of people each year as breast cancer. Society today just favors women more.
4 :
Breast cancer is far more deadly.
5 :
Because its hard to shut a woman up. Men dont want to talk about it apparently. So thats their prerogative. Women, on the other hand, are not shy about this and want every other person to learn from what has happend to others.
6 :
"The two diseases kill similar numbers... A man diagnosed with prostate cancer has only one-quarter of the cash spent on research into his disease compared to the amount devoted to a woman̢۪s breast cancer. The wide discrepancy shows the scale of the discrimination against men" http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article579050.ece In the US prostate cancer research gets a little over half of the money allocated to breast cancer http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/NCI/research-funding
7 :
another sexist policy by feminazis.
8 :
Every damn week one you ask this and the answer does not change: Men die WITH prostate cancer not FROM it. The five year survival rate is 99%. Men are usually older when diagnosed. One form of prostate cancer strikes younger men and it is virulent- it receives most of the federal research dollars. Men and women die of breast cancer. The five year survival rate is 89% after much research. Yes more money is funneled into research mostly private $$. Women did the work to make it so. If men want more private $$ into prostate research they can do the work. No one is stopping you.

Can prostate cancer cause your ankles to swell

Can prostate cancer cause your ankles to swell?
I was looking at the symptoms of prostate cancer and saw that if it has spread that it could cause your legs to swell. Also, can it cause for you not to be able to have an erection, or keep one. I need serious answers please, this is just ammo for me to get my husband to get to the doctors... Thank you...

I can give you lots of ammo for that. My husband died of prostate cancer in 2007. Prostate cancer may have almost no symptoms at all until it is too late. The most usual symptom is having to get up to pee in the night, but that can also be a symptom of other things. By the time he experienced swelling in his ankles from prostate cancer, it would be very advanced, and he would have many other symptoms. When prostate cancer spreads, often the first place it is apparent is in the bones. Cancer in the bones is excruciatingly painful. My husband suffered for months because of the cancer that had spread to his spine, and other bones. Believe me, if he gets prostate cancer, whether or not he gets and maintains an erection will be the least of his worries. Erectile dysfunction is more likely to be a result of prostate cancer surgery than the cancer before it is diagnosed. Many men avoid the prostate cancer checks because they are afraid of the rectal exam. Ask him if he would prefer a rectal exam that lasts a few seconds or months of having to wear a catheter because the cancer in his prostate has grown so much that he can no longer pass urine. And in any case, the main test for prostate cancer is a blood test, the PSA test. My husband was a fit, active healthy man, whose only symptom was needing to pee in the night. He was still going up the mast of our sailboat, and also doing the work at the top of the masts of other sailboats for men much younger than him. He jumped from the edge of a canal to a sailboat that was loose in the canal during a hurricane in North Carolina and saved that boat and other boats that were tied in the canal on the night before the cancer was diagnosed. He lived less than 18 months after the diagnosis. Tell your husband to go get checked. It is not a big deal, and it could be the difference between life and death. Feel free to email me if you need more information.

Why is there more focus on breast cancer than prostate cancer when both kill equally

Why is there more focus on breast cancer than prostate cancer when both kill equally?
The NFL is a host of...yes, Breast Cancer. The commercials on Fox today supported Breast Cancer and not prostate cancer. Both are equally deadly but we see more "breast cancer" because it is PC. If you disagree, you are retarded (hate to say it).

Because everybody loves breasts!
2 :
Actually prostate cancer kills more men than breast cancer kills women. Funding for diseases are not always rational. Breast cancer had a strong champion in the feminist movement who were campaigning for more focus on women's health issues. I know it seems unfair that this focus still exists, as in general women are healthier than men. Unfortunately health care and politics mix together. But this doesn't take away from the fact that breast cancer is a serious issue and while we should also fund and support initiatives related to prostate cancer, we shouldn't ignore breast cancer.
3 :
Although they are both very common perhaps breast cancer is more common than prostate cancer.

Prostate Cancer- What should a daughter do

Prostate Cancer- What should a daughter do?
My dad has just been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. We are still unsure of which stage he is in right now as a bone scan has just been done yesterday. I have been accompanying him for medical checkups but would like to know what else I can do to help him through this difficult time as my mum is no longer with us. How can I help him overcome his fears and to let him know that I am here for him through this?

I know how you feel I live with my grandmother who has cancer and when we found out it was like the floor falling out from under us all. Unfortunately there isn't a lot us outsiders can do. Just be there for him and let him know your ear is open anytime he needs. Going with him to appts will really help because you might hear something he misses or vice versa. I would suggest you try to get him to join a support group (my grandma refuses) it would let him talk to people who are going to the same thing as him which is something we just can't understand as much as we wish we could. Let him know you'll do anything and everything he needs you too but be careful not to smother him or treat him like an invalid unless he truly becomes one he needs to know he can still take care of himself too. Good luck to you and your father and I hope he has a good fight.
2 :
Make sure for a start that you do not blame him for the cancer. Be assuring and positive thinking.
3 :
First relax. Prostate Cancer is very curable, especially if it was found early. Did he have any symptoms, or was it found because he had a rising PSA? I am 62, and was diagnosed with PC last year. I was treated with the radioactive seed implants. It is called Brachy Therapy and I am doing fine now. Good luck, he will be fine.

I am truly sorry for your father and you, I been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when I was with 32 yrs. old, , I'm waking with a lot of difficulties and I use a cane, I know on my heart how your father is feeling and you too, it is to hard to deal with cancer and any other illnesses, when you are sick and you cannot be the person that you were before, comes a lot of depression, take care of him, don't let him get into a depression but what I can say to you is that you are doing right, accompany your father into the doctor visits, and, called for his doctor and talk with him about his health and ask what can you do to help your father go through that, what are his chances to fight against cancer, I KNOW IS HARD, BUT DON'T GIVE UP, HE JUST CAN COUNT WITH YOU ! I wish the best for him !!
5 :
http://www.prostate-cancer.org.uk/ a good site with a message board were you can get support from other daughters and relatives
6 :
some types of this cancer are very slow growing and therefore do not have to be treated because old age will get to him first.
7 :
Prostate cancer forms in the tissues of the prostate. Except for skin cancer, cancer of the prostate is the most common cancer in American men. It was estimated that more than 186,000 men in the United States would be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2008 . In most men with prostate cancer, the disease grows very slowly. The majority of men with low-grade, early prostate cancer (which means that cancer cells have been found only in the prostate gland) live a long time after their diagnosis. Even without treatment, many of these men will not die of prostate cancer, but rather will live with it until they eventually die of some other, unrelated cause.
